Microcement and microtopping are two of the most requested finishes we install across Miami-Dade and Broward County, and they get confused constantly because both create a smooth, seamless, concrete-look surface over an existing floor or wall. They are not the same product, though, and picking the wrong one for a project can mean callbacks, cracking, or a finish that does not hold up the way the client expected.

What Microtopping Is

Microtopping is a cement-based overlay, typically applied at 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick, designed to resurface an existing concrete slab. It is the more affordable, more forgiving option and is applied specifically over concrete floors that are structurally sound but worn, stained, or dated-looking. Because it is cement-based, it needs a concrete or masonry substrate underneath and generally is not applied over drywall, wood, or other non-cementitious surfaces.

What Microcement Is

Microcement is a polymer-modified cement coating engineered to be applied much thinner (often 2-3mm total) and, critically, over a much wider range of substrates: not just concrete floors, but also walls, countertops, stair treads, shower surrounds, and even over existing tile in many cases with the right primer. It is a more technical, multi-coat system (primer, base coats, and a sealer) and is the material of choice when the goal is a monolithic, grout-line-free look across floors, walls, and vertical surfaces in the same space.

The Core Differences

Substrate: Microtopping needs concrete underneath; microcement can go over concrete, tile, drywall backer, and other prepared substrates, including walls and vertical surfaces.
Thickness: Microtopping runs thicker; microcement is applied in very thin, multiple coats.
Application scope: Microtopping is floor-only in almost all cases; microcement is used on floors, walls, showers, and furniture-scale surfaces.
Cost: Microtopping is generally the more budget-friendly option for straightforward floor resurfacing; microcement’s broader capability and labor-intensive process put it at a higher price point.

Which One Is Right for Your Project?

If you have a worn or dated concrete floor and want an affordable, durable, seamless resurface, microtopping is usually the right call. If you want a continuous, grout-free look that carries from the floor up the walls or into a shower, or you are covering a non-concrete substrate like existing tile, microcement is almost always the better fit. We evaluate the existing substrate, the rooms involved, and the budget before recommending either system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can microcement go directly over old tile?
In most cases, yes, with the correct primer and surface preparation. This is one of the biggest advantages of microcement over microtopping, which requires a concrete substrate.
Is microtopping as durable as microcement?
Both are durable when installed and sealed correctly. Microtopping is typically used for floors only, while microcement’s multi-coat system is engineered to hold up on both floors and high-wear vertical surfaces like shower walls.
Do microcement and microtopping look different once finished?
Both produce a smooth, seamless, concrete-look finish and can be tinted to similar color ranges. The visible difference comes mostly from where each is used, since microcement extends the look onto walls and other surfaces that microtopping cannot cover.
